Rangers’ best players could be the subject of serious interest in January, and the club have to be wary of it.

The talk this week regarding transfer news in January has seriously kicked off. It’s been revealed that Steven Gerrard is eyeing up to four new players. This is to add to the 15 he brought in over the course of the summer.

Rangers’ recruitment drive has been the main focal point of discussions. Gerrard, however, will only be looking to build on what’s already at the club. That’s why it’s imperative that Rangers do all they can to keep their top stars.

Just last season, the Ibrox club had to thwart a reported £9million bid from a Chinese club for Alfredo Morelos. Considering the fact that the Colombian has come on leaps and bounds this season, interest in him is sure to be red-hot.

Connor Goldson is another who continues to impress at Ibrox. He’s managed to remain a solid figure despite having two different defensive partners being swapped consistently beside him. Striking up a regular partnership has been difficult for the Englishman, but he’s done tremendously well since arriving in pre-season.

Key figures

There’s also the likes of Allan McGregor and Ryan Jack. Both are loyal Rangers men and it would take some offer to prize them away from Ibrox. If there’s no interest in the former in particular then it will be a huge surprise. For Gers supporters, however, it would certainly be welcome.

The fact is that Rangers have built up a very sound and promising squad. This squad contains key cogs in it, however, who are essential to Rangers’ success post-January.

It doesn’t matter how much money they realistically get offered for the likes of Morelos or McGregor – Rangers can’t say yes. Not at this stage of the Gerrard revolution.

There will come a time when the club’s best players have to leave. Rangers, however, are still trying to build a squad to win the Scottish Premiership. Losing their best players would only set them back with no guarantee it would be reinvested more wisely.

So whilst Rangers head into January with several areas for improvement in their minds, it’s important they keep the strongest elements of their side at Ibrox at the same time.

It’s going to be huge month for Gerrard, and he simply has to get it right at both sides of the revolving Ibrox door.
