Rangers have already interviewed an ideal Ross Wilson replacement who signed Dele Alli for £5m

Rangers fans have been left shocked by the news that Nottingham Forest want to hire Ross Wilson as their new Director of Football.

Wilson – according to The Athletic – is a target for Nottingham Forest after they chose to sack Filippo Giraldi on Tuesday.

That is despite the fact that the 39-year-old is yet to convince many in Glasgow about his qualities at the negotiating table, following a number of disappointing signings since he arrived at Ibrox from Southampton in 2019.

Therefore, some would argue that it may be a blessing in disguise if Nottingham Forest hire Wilson.

If those at the City Ground are successful in their attempts to appoint the Englishman, Rangers have an ideal replacement just waiting to be offered a new opportunity.

Rangers can replace Ross Wilson with Paul Mitchell

In terms of timing, Rangers are actually quite fortunate – there are a number of impressive Sporting Directors available right now, such as Michael Edwards and Paul Mitchell.

Speaking of Mitchell, Rangers have actually already interviewed him.

According to the Daily Mail, the 41-year-old held talks with those at Ibrox back in 2017 about moving to Glasgow, although nothing ever came of it.

Mitchell ended up staying at Tottenham – where he signed Dele Alli for £5m in 2015 – before joining RB Leipzig in 2018 and then Monaco in 2020.

Interestingly for Rangers, the Englishman recently announced that he would be leaving the French giants as he wants to make a return to the United Kingdom for family reasons.

He told Nice Matin: “I have spent a lot of time away from home and my loved ones in recent years. I feel that the mission I had, which was to rebuild the sports project, has been fulfilled.”

Given the fact Rangers have already spoken to Mitchell before, you would presume that they continued to monitor his career and still have his details on record, so another interview surely isn’t out of the equation.

It should also be noted that Mitchell signed Heung-min Son for £22m and Toby Alderweireld for £11.4m – he is a very smart operator, to say the least.

Be sure to keep an eye out for Mitchell’s name if Wilson does join Nottingham Forest, as we believe he could once again be in the running for the Director of Football role at Rangers.
