Rangers fans have been handed a major boost after it was announced football stadiums can open at reduced capacity from September 14th.
First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced the move as First Minister’s Questions as Scotland prepares to enter the next phase of exiting lockdown.
The SNP politician also revealed that fans will only be allowed back in subject to conditions such as the coronavirus infection rate being low enough.
Test events are also being scheduled to ensure protocols are rigorous enough and fluid social distancing measures will be in place.
“We hope from September 14 sports stadia will be able to open but only with a strict number of spectators and strict physical distancing in place,” said Sturgeon [Scotsman].
“Some professional sports events might be arranged for spectators to attend have before then, with Scottish Government agreement to test the safety of any new arrangements.”
It is not clear if Ibrox will play host to any of these test events but with the season starting behind closed doors it is a major boost to season ticket holders desperate to see their side in action.
Whilst it will be a strange experience to see Ibrox at reduced capacity, returning to the famous ground will be a notion that excites fans and they’ll be eager to hear the club’s plans in this regard.
The last major football match to be played in front of crowds in Scotland was at Ibrox back on March 12 as a crowd of 50,000 watched the Gers fall to a 3-1 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen.
