Rangers handed Europa League boost with Lyon, Sparta Prague and Brondby draw

Rangers are set to face off against French outfit Lyon, Czech club Sparta Prague and Danish Champions Brondby in a tough but winnable Europa League draw.

The Gers are spared tricky trips deep into Eastern Europe and all of the matches are very much winnable if the Ibrox side can get their act together after the international break.

Not only that but allowing for travelling, all three represent major away days with their own charm as Lyon, Prague and Copenhagen are cities with plenty to offer.

Lyon finished fourth in Ligue 1 last season and whilst they represent perhaps the glamour aspect of the draw, their season hasn’t quite got started yet.

The French outfit are without a win in three matches, picking up two points from two draws in what promises to be a challenging French top-flight this season.

Not only that, but Lyon is a place Rangers fans will remember fondly after that famous 3-0 away victory on the Rhone back in 2017 in the Champions League.

Sparta Prague finished second in the Czech First League last season, finishing behind unbeaten Champions and familiar Rangers foes Slavia Prague.

Given the tense nature of the relationship between the Gers and Slavia an away day to Prague comes with its own baggage but Sparta have visited Glasgow recently.

In fact, the Czech side dumped Celtic 4-1 twice – including that hilarious night at Parkhead – only last season and they’re probably not be underestimated.

Brondby are the Danish Champions and fell at the Champions League Playoff hurdle to RB Salzburg in what was a bitterly disappointing 4-2 aggregate defeat.

Not only this, but their defence of the Danish crown is off to a rocky start and after winning their first title in 16 years they’re without a win in six games in the Danish Superliga, drawing four times.

These are winnable games and this is a winnable group and Rangers fans will be happy that there’s a good blend of glamour and potential ahead of their fourth straight Europa League campaign.

Whilst Rangers are in the draw, it must be said that the Ibrox side certainly made it hard for themselves against Alashkert as two players in particular failed to impress.
