Rangers handed Benfica boost as £18m man ruled out with foot injury

Rangers have been handed a Europa League boost by the news that £18m Benfica midfielder Pedrinho will be ruled out of the upcoming Europa League tie in Lisbon.

Benfica splashed out close to £90m on new players in the summer with Brazilian Pedrinho, 22, joined from Corinthians in his homeland for a fee of €20m (£18m) [Benfica].

According to Portuguese outlet O Jogo, the winger has fractured a bone in his left foot after being subbed off in last week’s 3-0 win over Standard Liege.

Pedrinho’s absence from the squad does come as a sizeable blow to Benfica but the Estadio de Luz club are well stocked in the attacking midfield areas.

The likes of Adel Taarabt, Rafa Silva and Pizzi will provide ample backup but Rangers have of course been given a boost by the fact an £18m player will be missing from Benfica’s squad.

Pedrinho isn’t the only player who’ll be missing for Benfica on Thursday either, with André Almeida (knee), Alex Grimaldo (ankle) and Todibo (Achilles) also missing out.

From a Rangers point of view only long-term absentee Nikola Katic is missing at the time of writing with boss Steven Gerrard expected to give an injury update in tomorrow’s press conference.

Both sides have won their opening two Europa League Group D matches with Benfica and Rangrs picking up wins against Standard Liege and Lech Poznan.

This will be Rangers’ biggest test of the season so far as they look to go 19 matches unbeaten at the start of this campaign.
