Celtic’s European run from last season will today provide Rangers with £370,000.

Brendan Rodgers’ side qualified for the Champions League group stages last season. According to the Scottish Sun, today is the day their cash boost for rival clubs hits the accounts.

Every side who were competing in the Premiership last season will be entitled to a split of the £4million. That means each club will bag a cool £370,000 each ahead of the January transfer window.

Interestingly, the sum is over three times as high as the prize money for winning the Scottish Cup. Despite that, it’s still over £600k below what clubs would receive for finishing last in the Premiership.

The payment is labelled as a “solidarity payment”, where clubs in the league the participant is involved in receive a financial boost. It’s a form of payment many Scottish football fans are aware of, and it’s certainly welcome to the Rangers coffers.

Rangers’ gain

Celtic made the group stages last season before being knocked out of the competition. They only managed to pick up three points in total before then being knocked out of the Europa League at the first hurdle against Zenit.

The sum is also nearly double what Rangers receive for drawing matches in the Europa League. It isn’t as high as the €570k they gain for winning matches in the group stages, however.

So far from European competition, Rangers have earned a total of €760k for their results in the group stage of the Europa League. Celtic’s cash boost to their rivals means that Rangers will have earned over €1.1million without even taking into account qualification money.

The Gers will have their eyes on earning a good €2m more before the end of the group stage. Qualification for the last 32 will also see the Gers receive another €500k.
