Rangers gamble fails to pay off as £3m gap becomes a chasm

When Rangers signed Man United kid Amad Diallo on loan in January, Ibrox director Ross Wilson was being lauded as a transfer genius.

After all, the Ivorian right-winger is regarded as one of the best young talents in the game and Man United paid £19m – rising to £37m – to bring him to Old Trafford from Atalanta.

But since signing for the club the 19-year-old has regressed into himself and has not had anywhere near the impact his stellar reputation suggested he should.

Subbed on for a rare appearance in the 4-0 victory over St Mirren, Amad is a player bereft of confidence and someone who has not been able to properly take advantage of his time.

Even against the Buddies the 19-year-old was not anywhere near firing and much of this may concern his lack of game time over the last few weeks.

Amad Diallo fails to plug Rangers Ianis Hagi chasm

The fact that Amad Diallo has been largely ignored in what has been a pivotal period of the season for Rangers speaks volumes about his impact on the club.

It also suggests the kid isn’t exactly pulling up any trees in training and performances such as his short cameo against St Mirren will do little to convince manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

Signed in reaction to Rangers losing £3m playmaker Ianis Hagi for the season – one of the club’s only match winners – Amad Diallo has failed to effectively fill the Rangers star’s boots.

The last few weeks have also proven just how much Rangers miss the Romanian playmaker.

As for Amad, his Rangers legacy to date involves a bright start at Ross County, being hooked at halftime v Celtic and failing to square the ball to Fashion Sakala in the draw with Dundee United.

As things stand, we’re not seeing anywhere near enough to suggest that this is going to change anytime soon.

Meanwhile, a report claims Rangers are bracing themselves for interest in a key first-teamer that the club values at over £13m.
