Rangers flop secures multi-million-pound move to Wolfsburg

There was some surprising transfer news concerning a former Rangers player on Thursday afternoon.
Kevin Mbabu secured a move to Bundesliga giants Wolfsburg for a fee of £8 million. The right-back signed a pre-contract agreement, meaning he will officially join from Young Boys in the summer, on a deal running until 2023 [Sky Sports].

“I’m really looking forward to this new challenge and the adventure in the Bundesliga,” he told
Wolfsburg’s club website.
“The facilities at the club are ideal for me to keep improving as a footballer at a high level.”
It’s a move few would have predicted during his time at Ibrox.

Since then, though, his career has been on an upward trajectory.
A second loan move away from the Toon took him to his native Switzerland with Young Boys. He’s been there ever since, winning a first league title in 32 years, featuring in the Champions League and earning international caps.

He looks unlikely to be playing European club football next season, with Wolfsburg currently sitting ninth in the Bundesliga.
Yet, it’s undoubtedly a step up in terms of the size of club and quality of the league.
£8 million is a hefty sum and it’s a testament to a player who has clearly continued to work hard, despite things not quite falling into place earlier in his career.
