One-time Rangers centre-back flop Fabio Cardoso plays for FC Porto as they send La Liga giants Atletico Madrid tumbling from the Champions League.

The now 28-year-old Portuguese defender spent one year at Rangers following the appointment of countryman Pedro Caixinha in 2017, with the Gers paying Vitoria Setubal a reported £1.3m to sign the player.

But things never worked out for Fabio Cardoso at Rangers with the defender most famed for that Ryan Bowman Betfred Cup elbow which left the player with a broken nose.

Whilst it was clear that Cardoso had talent, Rangers fans might be surprised to read about his development back in Portugal as he helps FC Porto to the Last 16.

The Portuguese club finished top of Group B in the competition, beating Spanish giants Atletico Madrid to secure their spot in the seeded side of the knockout round draw.

Fabio Cardoso played the full 90 minutes minutes and picked up a yellow card as first-half goals from Mahdi Taremi and Stephen Eustaquio were enough to see off Atleti despite an injury time Ivan Marcano own goal.

The result sees FC Porto progress alongside Club Brugge, with Bayer Leverkusen falling into the Europa League spot and Atletico Madrid in an unprecedented exit.

Ex-Rangers defender Fabio Cardoso signed for FC Porto in the summer after four years with Santa Clara in the Primeira Liga.

The centre-back was an unused substitute in FC Porto’s first three Champions League matches but played every minute of the final three matches, which the Portuguese side won.

In total, Fabio Cardoso made 18 appearances for Rangers but was actually released from his contract just as Steven Gerrard took over the Ibrox side.

Meanwhile, one ex-Rangers star was clipped with the Ibrox crowd as he paid the famous ground a visit during the week.
