Rangers first-team player drops down to B team for Cove Rangers clash

Rangers midfielder Stephen Kelly has dropped down to the B team for tonight’s SPFL Trust Trophy quarter-final tie against Cove Rangers at the Balmoral Stadium.

Kelly has been a part of the first-team setup at Ibrox so far this campaign following encouraging loan spells at Ayr United and Ross County in the previous two seasons.

The 21-year-old was on the bench for last week’s Europa League win over Sparta Prague but he’s only made two first-team appearances so far this season and Gio van Bronckhorst has released him to the B-team group for some much-needed playing time.

Kelly is captaining the Young Gers as they eye a place in the final four.

They’ve already seen off Dumbarton, Ayr United (Rangers were awarded a 3-0 win after Ayr broke competition rules) and Alloa Athletic, but tonight’s fixture promises to be their toughest test yet.

Cove are currently top of League One and they saw off Albion Rovers 4-1 in the previous round.

Kelly is joined in the starting XI by the likes of Leon King, Alex Lowry, Charlie McCann and Tony Weston, while Charlie Lindsay and Juan Alegria are amongst the substitutes.

“It is another opportunity to go and test ourselves against another really good outfit in Cove,” said B team assistant coach Brian Gilmour ahead of the game [Rangers.co.uk].

“They have a lot of experienced players and they are a good side so we are under no illusion that it will be a tough test for our lads but we are really looking forward to what is hopefully an enjoyable evening.”

Meanwhile, Rangers director of commercial and marketing James Bisgrove has made an admission about the future of the Gers’ relationship with Castore.
