Rangers finally have goalscorers all over the pitch

Rangers’ goalscoring potential is now as high as it’s been in a long time.

Today’s 5-1 mauling of St Johnstone was yet more proof that there are goals throughout this Rangers side. In recent years, the Gers just haven’t had enough threat from either the midfield or the back-line. With the likes of Joe Garner at the club, sometimes the forward-line was barely chipping in.

Now, it appears as though there are goalscorers placed everywhere in the squad. In the win against the Saints, five different goalscorers got on the scoresheet. In total now, that’s 12 different goalscorers since the season began.

Nikola Katic, Connor Goldson, and captain James Tavernier are all chipping in from the back. Meanwhile, the midfield is finally hitting its groove also. Scott Arfield has bagged two in his last two games, whilst Daniel Candeias, Ovie Ejaria, Lassana Coulibaly, and Ryan Kent have all netted this season.

Kyle Lafferty and Alfredo Morelos both continue to impress with goals on a weekly basis.

The only thing now missing from Rangers is Allan McGregor going on a mazy run and firing one into the top corner. Indeed, Rangers are so heavily stacked when it comes to goal threats that it wouldn’t overly surprise you.

Essential for a title-challenge

It’s the kind of thing that Rangers need to have if they’re to challenge for the title this season. Already, Ibrox is looking like a real fortress once more. That’s only because of the amount of goal threats in the squad these days. When certain players don’t score, other players do and vice versa.

Victories like the one over St Johnstone always provide a lot more confidence when an array of different scorers have netted. Rangers seem to have that luxury now of knowing no matter who the ball drops to, they can stick it home.

Could you have imagined having the same confidence in Russell Martin last season? No chance, Rangers have players in each position who know where the goal is. It’s telling in the stats, and it’s increasing each individual’s confidence in front of goal. That’s part of the reason Rangers have now scored 11 goals in their last three games alone.

It’s a huge achievement for Steven Gerrard to have brought this element to the club. Now, it’s about building some consistency in terms of victories. Next up is a big Betfred Cup quarter-final clash at home to Ayr United on Wednesday night.
