Rangers fans will be hoping familiar face doesn’t steal show on Ibrox return

Former Rangers striker Kyle Lafferty has made a return to the Scottish Premiership with Kilmarnock with the club’s first match since signing the Northern Irish international at Ibrox.

It’s not clear if the Ulster striker will make his Killie bow in the familiar surroundings of the famous stadium where Lafferty has spent two spells in his career.

Starting his career at Burnley, Lafferty is probably best remembered in the blue of Rangers courtesy of his first spell at the club between 2008 and 2012 where he won six trophies.

The potential for the 33-year-old striker returning to the Scottish game at Rangers adds an extra dimension to the match with the Gers desperate to get back to winning ways.

It’s also only Tommy Wright’s second match in charge of the club as he looks to steer the Rugby Park club back on course amid a run of six straight defeats.

Lafferty’s second spell at Ibrox was considerably less successful than his first with the striker eventually being released from his contract after only one season in 18/19.

Since then the striker has turned out for Sarpsborg 08 in Norway, Sunderland in League One, Reggina in Italy and was even linked with a return to Romania with Liga I side Sepsi before Kilmarnock came knocking [ProSport].

Killie are remarkably the 79-cap Northern Irish international’s 13th club with a spell in Edinburgh with Hearts previously resurrecting a career which has experienced plenty of challenges.

Kilmarnock have got themselves a good player here if Tommy Wright can get the most out of Lafferty and for a team which hasn’t scored in four of their last five games, the stage is set for the forward.

But Rangers fans will be hoping that isn’t the familiar one of Ibrox as the forward is handed an opportunity to impress with the Ayrshire side.

Rangers face a stern test against Kilmarnock this weekend with the Gers’ potential starting XI impacted by two retrospective banning orders.
