Rangers fans have thrown their support behind Ibrox boss Steven Gerrard after the club’s 3-2 defeat to St. Mirren in the Betfred Cup.

The Ibrox gaffer took responsibility for the defeat after the match with Gerrard’s rather complacent team selection one of the biggest influences behind the shock loss.

As a result, Gerrard was eager to defend his player’s in the aftermath of the unacceptable defeat as he set them a challenge to bounce back from the match.

“I’m not going to point any fingers or criticise anyone. I’m going to stand forward and take the responsibility,” said Gerrard [Herald].

“Because they’re my players. I signed the majority, if not all of them. I pick the tactics, make the decisions. So it’s on me.

“You are not expecting to win every game and there will be bumps in the road. But this is more than a bump. It was a big opportunity.

“In the league or Europe, you get a chance to recover. But there’s no chance to recover in a knockout competition, so it stings even harder.

“So we have to live with that and take what’s going to come our way. My job now is a big job, to make sure we are ready to go again.”

With Gerrard accepting he got it wrong in Paisley as Rangers’ run of 27 games unbeaten came to an end, Gers fans threw their support behind the gaffer ahead of Saturday’s match with Motherwell:

Rangers will now have to turn their focus quickly back to the Scottish Premiership where they can go 16 points clear if they beat Motherwell at Ibrox this weekend.

But even if the club’s fans are throwing their support behind the manager, one major selection decision proved costly in the match as the Gers lost 3-2 in Paisley.
