Mikael Lustig vs Ryan Kent was a duel many would’ve thought Rangers would get some joy out of.

The truth is, however, that it was effectively what won the game for the Ibrox side yesterday.

As Rangers overcame rivals Celtic 1-0 at Ibrox yesterday, Lustig was one of Brendan Rodgers’ worst performers. To be fair, you could say that to just about anyone in green-and-white, but Lustig was specifically dreadful.

And so much so that it was costly for his side. He sold himself for Kent’s set-up for Ryan Jack’s goal. That would end up being the winner for the Gers, with Lustig later going off with a debatable injury.

Since then, Rangers supporters have been constantly winding up the big Swede on Twitter. Lustig has always been one to celebrate wins over Rangers in mocking fashion to the Gers support. But on Twitter yesterday, the tables had certainly turned.

You can see some of the banter below:

Rangers fans have craved getting one over Lustig

For many Rangers fans, Lustig has been a player that’s not been particularly full of class over the years. His constant winding up of the Rangers support and over-the-top reactions rub opposition players up the wrong way. It’s not just Rangers either, with the likes of Aberdeen and Hearts also taking a disliking to him.

Despite that, however. yesterday was a day for many to get their own back. Despite consistently being one of the inferior players on Old Firm days, Lustig has always basked in glory that other players have earned for him. He’s yet to have been heard of since going off yesterday.

It’s important to stress, of course, that there’s nothing wrong with a bit of banter. Lustig and the Rangers fans certainly don’t see eye-to-eye, but it’s all good fun in the main. Getting one over your rivals should allow you to have bragging rights.

It’s been a long time since Rangers fans have been able to experience a victory like that one yesterday. Dominant and one-sided – Celtic just had no answer to them.

The club now head into the winter break feeling mightily good about themselves. The work, however, is nowhere near done, and Steven Gerrard will know that.
