Rangers fans have put club rivalries to one side as they send their support to Celtic legend and Lisbon Lion Bertie Auld following a dementia diagnosis.

Celtic took to Twitter to announce Auldโ€™s diagnosis as the 83-year-old comes to terms with the heart-breaking condition.

โ€œBertie Auldโ€™s family would like all Celtic fans and football fans in general to keep Bertie in their prayers as they confirmed today that he is suffering with Dementia,โ€ reads a Celtic statement.

โ€œThe family would like to thank everyone for their huge support and request privacy during this difficult time.

โ€œBertie is being well cared for at his own home, surrounded by all the family.

โ€œEveryone at Celtic would like to add their best wishes to Bertie and his family. Bertie is a true Celtic icon, one of our greatest sons and someone the Club and our supporters love and respect dearly.

โ€œWe will continue to give Bertie and his family all our love, care and our ongoing full support at this hugely challenging time.โ€

Bertie formed part of a legendary Celtic team that became the first British side to win the European Cup in 1967 and the first Scottish team to win 9 in a row.

Auld is only one of six Lisbon Lions still alive and his diagnosis comes after the condition claimed the lives of former teammates Stevie Chalmers and Billy McNeill within a week of each other in 2019.

Some things are much bigger than football and Bertie has earned the backing of Gers fans whoโ€™ve taken to social media to applaud the former midfielder:

The football community in Scotland and across the world has come together to support the Celtic legend after what is a painful diagnosis for Auld and his family.

Rangers fans also came together to pay tribute to former Celtic captain Billy McNeill after his passing in 2019.
