Rangers fans have been sending messages of support after the club confirmed legendary former manager Walter Smith is recovering from an operation in hospital.
Unfortunate rumours began to spread on social media regarding the situation involving Walter and the club have sensibly broken a silence on it but are clear his family have requested privacy at this difficult time.
This short statement will put an end to much social media chatter regarding the Rangers legend, who won 21 honours across two spells as manager, including 10 league titles, guiding the Gers to a European Final in 2008.
Smith, 73, is for many people the epitome of what it means to be a Ranger and there is not a fan out there who will not be thinking of Mr Rangers and his family at this time.
Taking over at Rangers in 1991, Smith would be manager for seven of Rangers’ 9IAR, making him the stand-out Gers figure for a generation of Bears.
Walter would then return to Ibrox – leaving his duties as Scotland boss in the process – with the Gers in transition after the unsuccessful Paul le Guen experiment in 2007, nine years on from when he left the club for the first time.
Smith’s second spell at Rangers heralded three league titles in a row and that UEFA Cup Final in Manchester, cementing Walter’s legacy at Ibrox with a new generation of supporters.
