Rangers fans have saluted the Motherwell support for raising close to £60k to help purchase season tickets for underprivileged families in the local community.
The Steelmen had previously announced plans to give supporters who purchased a season book last season a free renewal as a goodwill gesture for their support.
At the same time an option was included to donate to the special fund which has now raised enough money to purchase 700 season tickets.
In total, fans raised £58,155 with the Fir Park club also pledging to match it ahead of the new season, meaning close to £120k has been raised to help support the local community.
“We once again want to give something back to those in our area who want to get to the football, and help them share in the community spirit and friendship that being in our stadium brings,” reads a Well statement.
“We want everyone to feel able to be part of our club, and remove the financial barrier to entry where possible.
“We are launching our Well In scheme, providing free season tickets to the unemployed and low-income families in our area.
“It is in our DNA to improve people’s lives where we possibly can. Giving people the lifeline of a network and an escape every fortnight at Fir Park could make the world of difference.”
The move also comes amid reports that unemployment has risen by 71% in Motherwell’s council area of North Lanarkshire [Daily Record].
