As Rangers fans lick their wounds still reeling from the domestic collapse which threatens to ruin their season, there is the small matter of Bayer Leverkusen on the horizon.

Yes, the famous Glasgow Rangers might be floundering on home soil but they remain the only Scottish club in Europe and have that peculiarly annoying ability to turn it on in Europe.

Ahead of the tie, the German outfit would pay tribute to Rangers manager and Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard for comments he made after the draw.

The Rangers boss had previously spoken about the German side being “the toughest Europa League draw Rangers could have got.” [Herald]

Calling Steven Gerrard a “legend”, the German club is clearly flattered with the praise from the former Champions League winner.

Bayer Leverkusen will come to Ibrox next Thursday (12th March) before the Rangers fans travel to Germany exactly seven days later (19th).

It is a magnificent achievement to get this Rangers team to the Europa League last 16 given the clubs resources and seeding in the competition.

Having dropped down into the competition from the Champions League, Leverkusen will be the Ibrox side’s biggest challenge yet and one the fans are clearly looking forward to.

Here’s how the Ibrox side’s supporters responded to the German club’s tweet:

Rangers fans will be under no illusions to the challenge they’ll face when Leverkusen come to town in the Europa League next week.

The German side held Champions League round of 16 side RB Leipzig 1-1 away from home in the Bundesliga at the weekend.
