Rangers fans have rejoiced on social media following the surprise announcement that Andy Firth has been handed a one-year contract extension [Rangers.co.uk].

Firth is, without doubt, the most unexpected signing Steven Gerrard has made since his appointment as Rangers manager.

The goalkeeper was plucked from English non-league football in January 2019 – a year after being released from the Liverpool Academy – and given an initial 18-month contract

Since then, he’s received only nine minutes of playing time, replacing the injured Wes Foderingham for the closing stages at Kilmarnock on the final day of the 2018/19 Premiership season.

However, he’s still landed a second contract extension and will remain at Ibrox at least until the end of next season.

“Everyone knows how much I love being here,” he told RangersTV. “It has been a really special year for us and I am just happy that I can stay here for next season.”

“It has been brilliant for me being here and to get the chance to work with Greegsy, he is incredible and to work alongside Jon is great. For me to pick the brains of people who have been there at all different levels and to have Colin Stewart to work with is perfect.

“The fact I am not playing has given me a chance to work on things you sometimes don’t get to work on when you are playing so it has definitely helped me a lot and I feel like I am in a good place and hopefully it will continue.”

Firth may not have made much of an impact on the pitch, but he’s a popular member of the dressing room, while he’s won over many supporters with his enthusiasm.

Given how late it is in the season, it had looked likely that he would be released in the summer, but Thursday evening’s surprise announcement was largely very well received, although some fans are a little jealous of the 24-year-old’s role.

Here’s a selection of reactions from Twitter:

In other news, two Premier League clubs are reportedly chasing a player who divided the fan base during his time at Ibrox.
