Rangers fans have responded to a report suggesting that Newcastle United want to sign James Tavernier.

The Scottish Sun claims that the Magpies are to ‘step up’ their pursuit of the Gers skipper and although they haven’t yet tabled a bid, they did send scouts to last weekend’s Old Firm to assess him.

Tavernier has had his difficulties this season, including three penalty misses and defensive lapses against both Young Boys and Hearts, but he’s been excellent recently and his numbers are outstanding.

He’s racked up an incredible 3150 minutes across 35 club appearances, which is a testament to his durability [Transfermarkt].

During those outings, he’s scored three goals and racked up 12 assists, as well as contributing to a whopping 19 clean sheets.

An integral part of Steven Gerrard’s best XI, the Gers simply can’t afford to let him go, especially given Jon Flanagan and Matt Polster are the only backup options.

Plenty of Bears are adamant that no offers, no matter how big, should be considered, insisting Newcastle look elsewhere if they need a right-back in the window.
