Some extremely positive news emerged from the Rangers Academy this afternoon.
Exciting youth prospect, Josh McPake has signed a contract extension with the club. The new deal ties him to Ibrox until at least 2022.
This is a big coup for the club, as the 17-year-old striker has reportedly attracted interest from elsewhere. According to the Daily Record, both AS Roma and Liverpool have been tracking the outstanding prospect.
That’s after he enjoyed an excellent 2018/19 season at both age-group and Reserves level.
McPake led the line for the side who brought the Scottish Youth Cup back to Ibrox with victory over Celtic at Hampden. A confident operator, he impressed plenty of Bears that night.
He also represented the club at last season’s Hong Kong Soccer Sevens.
It’s clear that Gerrard rates McPake highly, as while he’s yet to make his senior competitive debut, he featured in the 5-0 pre-season win over Oxford United on Sunday.
It remains to be seen what the plan for the young forward is this season. At 17, it’s quite early for a loan stint, so he’s likely to spend the majority of the season at development level, providing cover for the first team when necessary.
The important thing, though, is that his long-term future is at Ibrox. There’s plenty of hype around this young player and hopefully, he’ll soon start to make his mark at Ibrox.
