On Thursday, Gio van Bronckhorst confirmed that he’d be giving opportunities to fringe men, players returning from injuries and youth prospects.

And he’s made eight changes to the side that drew 1-1 with Aberdeen in the Premiership on Tuesday night.

Jon McLaughlin replaces Allan McGregor in goal, but there are only two changes to the back four.

James Tavernier and Connor Goldson continue, with Calvin Bassey and Borna Barisic dropping out for Jack Simpson and Leon Balogun.

Ahead of them, only Ianis Hagi keeps his place from last time out at Pittodrie.

James Sands, Glen Kamara, Ryan Kent, Scott Wright and Alfredo Morelos all drop out and have been replaced by John Lundstram, Juninho Bacuna, Brandon Barker, Fashion Sakala and Cedric Itten.

While no emerging or Academy players have made the starting XI, Leon King, Alex Lowry and Charlie McCann are all on the bench.

Many supporters were taken aback by the manager’s decision to hand Brandon Barker his first appearance of the season.

The ex-Man City Academy starlet had previously only made one 2021/22 matchday squad.
