Rangers fans lined the streets of Edmiston Drive today as Fernando Ricksen’s funeral cortège passed Ibrox on his way to finally being laid to rest.

The former Ibrox captain died last week at the tender age of 43 after a six-year battle with the debilitating Motor Neurone Disease.

Not only was Ricksen a hero on the pitch to Rangers fans, but he was also an MND warrior who spent much of his time with the condition fighting to help cure and raise awareness of it.

As the funeral passed by Ibrox, the streets adorned with red, white, blue and orange, thousands came along to pay their respects to a footballer who embodied much of the Rangers spirit.

Ricksen leaves behind a young family and how deeply emotional and touching the outpouring of support from the club’s fans must be to them.

Rangers fans themselves have been taking to Twitter to express their feelings on an emotionally charged day in Glasgow.

Ricksen’s passing has brought people from across football together, as the former Dutch international unites the game around fighting the ailment which eventually took his life.

But at Ibrox, Ricksen always held a special place in the hearts of Rangers fans for how he played, something which was emboldened by the way he fought his illness.

A special documentary detailing “The Final Battle” Ricksen faced in his life has also had fans teary-eyed in the last few days.
