Rangers chairman Dave King has announced his intention to step down from his role in the New Year, saying Rangers no longer needs his support in that capacity anymore.

The South Africa-based businessman has been through the wringer at the very top of Rangers since taking over the club alongside the Three Bears in 2015.

But now, saying that the “crisis is behind us”, King has decided to step down to focus on more private affairs following an announcement at the club’s AGM.

It will come as a big shock to Rangers fans with King being the stabilising influence at Ibrox over the last five years.

In the face of Takeover Panels, share issues, terrible managerial appointments and the tiresome retail battle with Sports Direct, King has helped drive Rangers from a footballing basket case to a club and squad with real assets and ambition.

It is an experience that King readily admits he has not been able to enjoy, describing it as a “duty” [Rangers].

Whilst Rangers’ rise won’t be fully resolved until the club secure their 55th domestic title, Dave King will still be watching on as a shareholder and supporter.

King described being the chairman at Ibrox as “by far the greatest privilege” of his business life.

The club’s supporters took to Twitter to express their views on the bombshell news coming out of Ibrox, with many viewing him as the saviour of a club in trouble.

The question will now be; who goes on to replace the outgoing Ibrox chairman?

You can read Dave King’s full speech from the AGM on the Rangers website HERE.

In it, the outgoing Ibrox Chairman reveals that he will “continue to represent Rangers on the board of Rangers Retail Limited until conclusion of the litigation with Sports Direct, however long that takes”.
