Rangers fans have praised Jermain Defoe after the striker delivered a message via the club’s Twitter account, about staying safe amid the global pandemic.

Public health has taken priority over football for the foreseeable future, with all professional and grassroots football in Scotland suspended since 13 March.

As yet, there’s great uncertainty about when it will be safe to resume matches, but a BBC Scotland report on Friday suggested that the SPFL believes there’ll be no action until at least August.

While the Gers players are sticking to individual training programmes at home, their workload has been drastically reduced and the club have asked several stars to hammer home to supporters the importance of staying safe and following hygiene recommendations.

Following James Tavernier and Florian Kamberi’s lead, Jermain Defoe was the latest to deliver a message on Friday evening.

“I would like to thank and pay tribute to the health workers, such as doctors, nurses, the ambulance drivers and everyone, for their bravery and courage in the face of this immense challenge,” he said in a video posted by the Rangers FC Twitter.

“I would also like to stress the importance of following the guidelines such as washing your hands and staying at home if you can. Keeping your distance when you go out, using hand sanitiser.

“I know everyone is missing football at the minute, but there are a lot more important things to worry about. But we’re all missing it and we’ll be back soon.”

Plenty of Bears appreciated the striker – who has 17 goals in all competitions this season – taking the time to address the Rangers family.
