Rangers fans rally around captain James Tavernier amid abuse claims

Rangers fans have rallied behind captain James Tavernier after online trolls abused the Gers captain amid criticism over several high-profile mistakes.

The marauding full-back has not quite hit the heights of last season but is a vital part of the Ibrox side and one of the club’s most loyal and longest-serving players.

He might be going through a bit of a rough patch – and some supporters may feel justified in calls for him to be benched – but messaging the Gers captain is a step too far.

There’s no suggestion here that Tavernier will be affected by the nonsense abuse he’s been getting from the more ignorant members of our support.

The Rangers captain has routinely backed himself to bounce back from disappointment before and you can bet this time will be no different.

An athlete and a committed presence on the right for Rangers, there will be no suggestion on his part that he’s ready to down tools for a spell on the sidelines.

Whilst the captain has made high-profile mistakes in two of the last three games, look at where we actually are in the table.

Nine games in and we’re still in the hunt for the league championship. Whilst surrendering top spot was frustrating, we need to back our players now more than ever.

It’s also worth noting that no-one got pass marks from Sunday’s match with Hearts. Tav mistake or not, we should’ve had enough to win that match.

From these Rangers fans the message is clear – back the captain and support the side or keep your mouth shut on Twitter.

It’s worth noting too that some fans best be careful what they wish for [Daily Record].
