After Rangers’ tie with Livingston at Ibrox was called off due to Storm Dennis [Rangers] it’s raised questions about the suitability of the winter break.
It’s now been rescheduled for tomorrow afternoon but any more call-offs would force a serious fixture pile up.
Midway through the Scottish Premiership season, the clubs take a three-week break which usually means the players get a week off before returning to a warm-weather camp.
Upon their return to action, they’re put through a gruelling schedule all the way up until May which could be relieved by a shorter break in the footballing calendar.
Rangers would’ve faced a monumental fixture pile-up should they have failed to rearrange the Livingston tie in the coming days with the club already struggling to fit in their game in hand against St. Johnstone.
Rangers have since rescheduled the fixture and are set to complete the tie this weekend.
But do we need to look at the suitability of the winter break when it is putting clubs, particularly those competing in Europe, under so much pressure at this stage of the season?
This isn’t about the woeful form of Rangers since the return – although the fact this has coincided with the winter break two years in a row suggests the Gers don’t cope well with it – but rather the impact it could have on the business end of the season.
Rangers could see fixtures shoehorned into the calendar which in turn could impact any potential Europa League participation or title charge.
