Aberdeen legend Willie Miller has been discussing Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos in comments which some Rangers fans believe have been sensationalised by the press.

Morelos sat out Rangers’ 2-0 win over Kilmarnock at the weekend as new Gers forward Kemar Roofe got off to a flyer with a debut goal on his first-ever start for the club.

Whilst Dons hero Miller paid tribute to the player’s ability, he also took aim at Morelos for not focusing on the task at hand and becoming a distraction in the dressing room.

“If you don’t have the right attitude it’s really difficult for the manager to pick a player, even one as talented as Morelos,” said Miller [BBC Sportsound 23/08/20].

“And with the goals that he scores for Rangers, they’re vitally important.

“But I don’t think it comes as any surprise, he seems a moody young man, doesn’t he?

“He looks overweight, I said that at Pittodrie.

“People were saying: ‘Oh, he’s playing a little bit deeper, a little bit different’.

“Listen, Alfredo Morelos is a striker, he wants to be in the box. He’s a predator.

“His quick feet weren’t there against Aberdeen either, so he’s let himself down by coming back looking unfit, in my eyes anyway.

“And now, if he’s not giving the manager everything and being, perhaps, a disruptive influence.

“Some of the temperamental scenes we’ve seen from him, not just recently but over the years.

“Difficult when you’ve got a player like that in the squad and difficult to manage as well, because you know he’s so important because he gives you goals.

“So what do you do? You go out and get someone who can give you similar.

“I think you have got to let him go if he’s being a disruptive character.”

Miller’s comments come after Rangers boss Steven Gerrard took aim at Alfredo Morelos following the victory at Ibrox.

The Liverpool legend didn’t miss the Colombian following the last week in training where Gerrard claims Morelos made it “easy” for the gaffer to drop him.

“I only want players who are hungry for the shirt,” said Gerrard [BBC Sport].

“If I see people who are not focused or who have taken their eye off the ball and not really, really hungry to get this football club results, I have to make easy decisions and Alfredo made it easy for me this week.”

The tabloid reaction to Miller’s comments – which were not designed to be sensational – has had some Rangers fans questioning the ongoing treatment of Alfredo Morelos in the press:
