Rangers fans have taken to Twitter to express their outrage over claims a journalist made about the club not deserving to make the 2008 UEFA Cup Final.
Whilst writer, journalist and Everton fan Greg O’Keeffe didn’t suggest that directly, he did suggest Everton should’ve perhaps been there instead.
He also described Rangers as an “average” side. Bluenoses weren’t happy.

Rangers had a monumental European run that season. It saw the club draw with Barcelona at home, beat VfB Stuttgart at Ibrox and even trounce Lyon 3-0 in France.
That was before we even dropped into the UEFA Cup. Once there, we got past the likes of Panathinaikos, Werder Bremen, Sporting Lisbon and Fiorentina to make it to the final.

Rangers fell at the final hurdle and were beaten 2-0 by Zenit St. Petersburg in Manchester.
It was a solid, hard-working, tactically disciplined side who also had the propensity for moments of magic. It was after being alerted to this O’Keeffe had to somewhat swallow his words. But he couldn’t resist leaving the boot in – even if for a joke.

It was an iconic cup run and one which will live very long in the memory for Rangers fans. However, the club was given absolutely no help by the powers that be and the fixture list. That’s despite challenging on four fronts. The general feeling is we’d simply run out gas by the Final.
It’s a sore feeling made even more painful by comments of former SFA President George Peat, who told the BBC that a rival Chairman intervened to ensure Rangers were given no assistance in the run up to the Final.
