Rangers fans question need for £26m Sky deal as RangersTV impresses

Rangers fans have questioned whether investing in fan media and RangersTV in the future will ensure better coverage and revenue than traditional broadcasting models such as Sky Sports.

The Ibrox club have invested in a pioneering media line up for this unique season where club media coverage will be scrutinised more than ever amid the coronavirus crowd lockout.

Season ticket holders have been handed virtual match passes to watch the club due to behind-closed-door games and the reality of reduced crowds when fans do return.

As a result, the Ibrox club has lined up a stellar cast of former stars, club legends, genuinely interesting voices, first-team players and Clive Tyldesley and Kevin Thomson on commentary.

It’s not just season ticket holders who can take advantage of the coverage either.

Fellow bears, rival fans or opposition supporters can also purchase a PPV match pass for £9.99 per game.

Such has been the early success of RangersTV some fans are calling for this standard of coverage to be made a regular commitment by Rangers.

The club’s supporters much prefer actual analysis of football matches over baiting punditry or the obsessive analysis of nothing incidents in order to stoke an inflammatory reaction.

Some are convinced this could be much more lucrative to Rangers themselves with the current TV deal worth a meagre £26m a season to Scottish Premiership clubs.

To put this into context, this is less than Switzerland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Holland and Belgium [BBC Sport], leagues which could easily be compared to the game in Scotland.

Current broadcasting deals would prevent such a situation without an arrangement with the broadcasters and the SPFL – but it hasn’t stopped fans dreaming.

This alternative coverage is already proving itself much more valuable to bluenoses, and not just because it’s Rangers-centric – but because it’s actually good.
