Rangers fans put Celtic rivals in their place after Scottish Cup exit claims

As Rangers crashed out of the Scottish Cup to St Johnstone, there were plenty of Celtic fans piping up on the internet as things got desperate regarding their campaign.

Rangers have enjoyed a successful season under the stewardship of Steven Gerrard with 55 secured, the “Holy Grail” of Celtic’s 10IAR halted, and a run to the last 16 of the Europa League for the second campaign in a row.

The club’s continuing failure in the domestic cups is a source of real frustration for fans and there’s little doubt this must change going forward.

But it would be deluded not to point to the success of this season so far with the prospect of an unbeaten Scottish Premiership suggesting the achievements might not be done yet.

Across the city we’ve seen our historically less successful rivals not only breathe a humongous sigh of relief that we’re out but also use this as a stick to beat us with.

Yeah, that’s the same club who’re 20 points behind us in the title race and who haven’t won a knockout round tie in European football for 16 years.

Apparently, the cup exit is evidence that their invincible squad of 16/17 – propped up by huge gap in finances and a five-year head start on Rangers – has undermined the Gers’ efforts this season.

Not only that but the message seems to be that Steven Gerrard is overrated in comments so angry you can just sense the seethe steaming off them.

Apparently, Ronny Deila is a better manager because he won more trophies or some other stretch designed as a transparent, passive aggressive coping mechanism for the reality of this season.

The Ibrox gaffer will forever be remembered as the man that secured 55 and stopped their 10 – even more so in their nightmares.

The comments only stand as evidence that Rangers’ success this season is a gaping, bloodied wound; an open sore made worse by the fact it’s happening in their season of all seasons.

And what is that season?

Ferencvaros, Shane Duffy, Sparta Prague, Ross County (twice), one goal and three defeats to Rangers, surrendering 55 at Tannadice, crying about the title celebrations, left managerless, rudderless and clueless, Terry Munro’s season-long funeral procession.

Rangers fans took great pleasure in putting their rivals back in their place as the reality of their season kicked away the imaginary leg they appeared to be standing on:

Not that Rangers fans aren’t well aware of how much of a monumental failure this was in the Scottish Cup this season.

The Gers support were unanimous in their interpretation of the St Johnstone match as Steven Gerrard’s side threw away the lead and bottled it in the shoot-out.
