Rangers fans have lauded Glen Kamara on Twitter after the midfielder starred for Finland in their Nations League win over the Republic of Ireland.

The 24-year-old has featured in five of the Gers’ opening six Premiership fixtures this season but has come in for some criticism, alongside fellow midfielder Ryan Jack.

Both players have been criticised for sitting too deep and being too safe in possession, with their roles appearing to revolve more around covering for the advanced full-backs rather than providing tempo from the middle of the park.

Kamara was imperious for his country on Sunday evening, though, showing real composure in possession and looking to play the ball forward with regularity.

Finland are a team on the rise and shocked many by emerging from a tough qualifying group to reach their first ever European Championships ahead of the likes of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Greece.

UEFA’s postponement of Euro 2020 doesn’t seem to have affected their focus, either, and after a disappointing defeat to Wales in their Nations League opener, they bounced on Sunday night with a 1-0 win over the Republic of Ireland in Dublin.

Fredrik Jensen scored the decisive goal in the 63rd minute, which was a fair reward for the visiting side given the number of opportunities they created.

Kamara played the full 90 minutes in midfield and impressed many Rangers fans, some of whom called for him to be given greater freedom when he features at club level.

Here’s a selection of reactions from Twitter:

Kamara will now return to Rangers and hope that this international display is enough to earn him a recall to Steven Gerrard’s XI for the upcoming Scottish Premiership clash against Dundee United at Ibrox.
