Rangers pulled off a deserved 1-0 win over Feyenoord on Thursday evening, in their opening Europa League Group G fixture.

In the end, the difference between the sides was a stunning first-half hit from Sheyi Ojo.

The Liverpool loanee had been quiet for the early portion of the game, with Scott Arfield the livelier half of Alfredo Morelos’ support cast.

Yet, Ojo’s first real contribution in an attacking sense would prove decisive.

He owes thanks to the impressive Borna Barisic, whose greater commitment saw him win a 50/50 with Rick Karsdrop, which presented Ojo with the ball in space 25 yards from goal. He still had everything to do from there though, and his left-foot strike was thunderous.

Ibrox erupted as it flew past opposition keeper Vermeer, with Gers great Ally McCoist showing his appreciation in the BT Sport commentary box.

Later in the first half, he showed great composure to sit down an opposition defender and earn himself a clear sighting at a second. This time, though, he couldn’t quite find the corner.

In the second period, as the Gers tightened up, he found himself more on the peripheries of the game and didn’t always bust a gut to track back in defence. Yet, he still received a rousing ovation when he was subbed off after 74 minutes.

He’s a rough diamond, but he provided the matchwinning moment.

Following the game, Ojo took to social media with an emotional tweet dedicating the goal the former Rangers captain Fernando Ricksen, as well as his dog who sadly passed away recently.

He included a picture of him pointing to the heavens after scoring, in a clear tribute to the former Dutch international, as well as a photo of his dog, which tugged at the heartstrings of fans, many of whom were impressed with the young player’s words.
