Rangers fans have praised Connor Goldson for his outstanding Europa League display against Porto on Thursday night.

Goals from Alfredo Morelos and Steven Davis saw the Gers to a famous European victory, but the result was built around a clean sheet and Goldson was crucial to that.

Steven Gerrard has four senior centre-backs to choose from, but there’s little doubt that he has the most trust in the 26-year-old, who has already made a whopping 25 appearances this season.

Partnered with Filip Helander, as he has been for the last five matches, the Englishman stood up to everything the opposition threw at him.

He was utterly dominant in the air, ensuring Porto got no joy with crosses from wide areas, while he made multiple well-timed blocks and clearances, just as it looked as though the defences had been breached.

At times his distribution has been shaky this season, but he used the ball efficiently in this contest, helping the team to play out from the back.

He’s been the constant while Helander, Katic and Edmundson have rotated in and out of the side, often grabbing the headlines. Yet, this performance showed just why Gerrard rates him so highly.

His efforts drew plenty of praise from Bears on social media, with some suggesting it was his best performance since joining from Brighton in the summer of 2018.
