Rangers fans have lauded Calvin Bassey after the young defender tweeted following his first start for the club in Sunday’s Premiership win over Motherwell.

The Gers signed Bassey from Leicester City early in the summer transfer window, bringing the 20-year-old in to provide back-up for first-choice left-back, Borna Barisic.

It was an interesting signing given that he hadn’t yet made a senior appearance for the Foxes and instead, had been a regular at U23 level prior to the shutdown of football.

He showed up well in pre-season, though, and has clearly earned the trust of Steven Gerrard through his efforts in training.

Bassey made two substitute appearances in the Premiership earlier in the season and was given a brief run out during the closing stages of the Europa League qualifying win over Willem II on Thursday night.

That paved the way for him to make his first start for the club during Sunday’s Premiership fixture against Motherwell.

It’s no easy task replacing the rested Barisic in the Rangers lineup, a player who has been a consistent standout for the Gers over the past year.

However, although he looked understandably a little nervous in possession on a couple of occasions, he impressed across the 90 minutes.

Bassey is a powerful young player and while Motherwell didn’t offer a huge amount in attack, he defended stoutly when called upon.

Unsurprisingly, James Tavernier was the more advanced of the two full-backs but the ex-Leicester player showed a willingness to get forward to support attacks in a positive first full outing.

He posted a series of action shots after the game alongside a caption in which he expressed his happiness with the result and his own involvement in the game, before praising his teammates who got on the scoresheet.

Plenty of supporters were impressed by what he offered and responded to the tweet with praise and encouragement.
