Rangers fans have lauded Allan McGregor on social media after the veteran keeper’s outstanding display against Willem II on Thursday night.
McGregor was recalled for the Europa League third-round qualifier, with impressive summer signing Jon McLaughlin dropping to the bench, but by the end of the game, there could be no complaints about that decision.
The former Scotland international benefitted from a slice of luck in the 15th minute when he spilled a long-distance shot at the feet of Greek international striker Vangelis Pavlidis, who was only able to hit the bar from close range.
Thereafter, though, he was outstanding.
McGregor pulled off several top saves for the visitors, denying the lively Dries Saddiki in a one-on-one situation shortly after Ryan Kent had put Rangers 2-0 up, before coming to the rescue again with a reaction stop at the beginning of the second half.
He made five saves in all, but the best came ten minutes from time, as he showed superb anticipation and reactions to keep out a close-range header from Pavlidis, beating the ball away from his goal and onto the striker’s hand.
Rangers emerged as 4-0 winners on the night courtesy of the goals from James Tavernier, Kent, Filip Helander and Connor Goldson, but the players have McGregor to thank for the clean sheet.
Had it not been for his heroics, the scoreline would have looked a whole lot different.
