Rangers fans in stitches at “horrific patter” on cringworthy Celtic banner

Celtic fans travelling to watch their 4-1 win at Hamilton unveiled a banner aimed at Rangers, referring to them as the coronavirus.

The flu outbreak in China has spread like wildfire across the country with cities on lockdown and even confirmed cases in the United Kingdom.

Unconfirmed reports appear to claim that the confusing banner – which simply reads “Rangers = Coronavirus” – was an attempt at patter from the travelling Celtic support.

Now, in Scottish football we can all, to a certain degree, enjoy a bit of patter even when it’s aimed at making fun of your own side.

When it’s funny it’s funny, and most people don’t things too seriously.

Unless of course people take it too far and use sectarian language or mock the dead and the ill.

It’s part of what makes Scottish football so entertaining, with the national game being a microcosm of the funny nature of Scottish people and Scottish life in general.

But by the same token, we can also appreciate when an attempt at banter is truly woeful.

This banner – which looks like it’s been scrawled with crayons on an old sheet – is one of those times.

Any right-thinking Celtic fan with a decent sense of humour must be cringing at the thought that this is the best bit of patter their support can come up with.

Just for a second imagine how this came about.

“You know what would be funny, Declan? Ye know that mad Chinese coronavirus how about a banner which compares Rangers to it?”

“Aye that’s a belter.”

Right ye are.

Rangers fans are understandably buckled, confused and embarrassed for them. And quite rightly so:
