Rangers fans have taken to social media to debate the merits of VAR, with the system set to be deployed at Ibrox for the first time in February.

Unlike in the Champions League, the referees were without assistance in the Europa League group stages, but it is set to be rolled out for the knockout rounds.

The Gers avoided a host of European giants to land Braga in the draw for the Round of 32 and VAR will be in operation when the sides meet for the first leg at Ibrox on 20th February.

The system is in place in all top European leagues including the Premier League and La Liga and was dreamed up to prevent clear and obvious errors.

We recently argued that had it been in place for the League Cup final at Hampden earlier this month, Celtic’s winning goal would have been ruled out in a matter of seconds.

However, there’s no doubt it’s still an imperfect system and in some cases, it’s creating controversy rather than avoiding it.

In England, in particular, there have been calls for it to be scrapped due to dubious decisions and the lengthy delays it’s causing in the middle of games.

It seems Bears are split on the prospect of having it in place for a Rangers game for the first time.
