Rangers fans assured club remain locked in talks despite Scot Gov claims

Rangers are in talks with the Scottish Government over the return of fans to Ibrox despite claims a local lockdown would affect the original plans.

The Gers’ tie against the Arabs on 12^th October has been pencilled in as a potential test event for fans who’ve been completely locked out during the coronavirus shutdown after an SFA statement.

But after Glasgow was put in a minor lockdown amid a rise in Covid cases, comments made by a government spokesperson to the Daily Mail suggested these plans had been quashed.

“We are engaged with representatives from a range of sporting bodies for a small number of pilot events to examine the feasibility of having spectators in stadia and planning has been underway for a number of months to allow this to happen,” said the Scottish Government representative.

“Discussions are still underway and further updates will be provided to stakeholders in due course but we are clear no proposed test events will take place within the three council areas for the duration of the restrictions.”

However following the news that the club has sold out its season tickets for a third consecutive year – despite the fact capacity crowds remain some distance away – Rangers have reassured fans they are in conversation with the government over a return.

“Rangers can confirm that we are in regular dialogue with the Scottish Government in relation to the return of fans to Ibrox stadium when it is safe to do so,” reads a club statement.

Rangers were the last club in Scotland to host a match in front of fans as 50,000 supporters attended the Europa League last 16 match against Bayer Leverkusen at Ibrox.
