Rangers fans are all saying the same thing after the Ibrox side eked out a 1-0 win on the road at a traditionally troublesome Rugby Park; that this was a huge win for Steven Gerrard’s side.

Rangers have often toiled at Kilmarnock – even when going in front – but Steven Gerrard’s XI started with an intensity and pressure which helped establish the first-half lead.

James Tavernier would give Rangers the points with an expertly executed penalty after a Ross Millen handball left Andrew Dallas with no choice but to point to the spot.

As the first half wore on Kilmarnock managed to get a foothold into the game but Rangers defended robustly and were experienced in the attack.

The forward line was perhaps lacking the usual fluidity which has come to define Gerrard’s side but the likes of Cedric Itten deserve credit for holding the ball up in tough conditions.

Over the piece, Rangers were probably good for the victory but the match wasn’t without its own hurdles, with the pre-match nerves certainly another factor in this tense win.

Allan McGregor also deserves credit as he got down for a low save from an Eamonn Brophy free-kick in the second half.

Before the match, every Bear was adamant the only thing that mattered was three points from a ground where we have toiled so much in recent seasons.

For the same supporters, this was a massive win which could be a huge three points come the end of the season.
