Rangers fans admit that Gers star “lucky” to escape red card for challenge

Rangers might’ve beat St Johnstone 1-0 at Ibrox but a generally dull match did have one major flashpoint when Kemar Roofe narrowly escaped a red for a challenge on Murray Davidson.

In a week where Alfredo Morelos has dominated the headlines after a petulant kick-out heralded a three-match suspension, Roofe’s challenge is once again proving a welcome distraction for some from the football.

Unlike last Wednesday, the striker wouldn’t go on to score the winner but it hasn’t stopped plenty bemoaning the decision to keep him on the pitch.

The striker was returning to the starting line-up for the visit of St. Johnstone and the challenge clattered into Murray Davidson’s ankle.

The midfielder would eventually have to go off and with the benefit of a replay, it certainly looks like a challenge worthy of a straight red.

Where it differs from the Morelos stuff is in the fact catching Davidson like this was clearly undeliberate and Roofe has gone in with the ball to be won.

But even Rangers fans think the £3.5m summer signing can count himself lucky that he wasn’t given his marching orders in the match:

Rangers defeated St Johnstone at Ibrox 1-0 courtesy of a second half Ianis Hagi strike and a late Allan McGregor save which continues an impressive record of 21 Scottish Premiership clean sheets this season.

Here’s how the players rated in the match as Rangers re-opened a 23-point lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership.
