It’s not been a bad week for Rangers fan Cameron Menzies, a name that might not be familiar unless you are a fan of darts and, in particular, the PDC World Championships.

Most sportsmen and women have a meticulous plan building up to key events that they have spent weeks and months planning for, not so for a member of the Ibrox faithful with lofty ambitions.

After a late night on Thursday watching Philippe Clement and Rangers triumph over Real Betis, Cameron Menzies was up early for work this morning before taking centre stage to beat Rusty-Jake Rodriguez in the first round at the Alexandra Palace.

As with most of the field, professional darts is a dream for the 34-year old from Glasgow but with several title wins to his name, he has had a more than respectable career so far.

The PDC World Championships is the event of the year as the best of the best compete for the crown that everyone who ever picks up the arrows wants to win.

When asked if having to do a day’s graft was ideal preparation for such a big occasion, he said:

“I’ll be honest with you, I never thought this would happen.

“I know I was working today but it kind of chilled me out a bit, if that makes sense?

‘It reminded me that darts is a hobby, and a very lucky hobby.”

A follow up question led one reporter to ask if he would be working tomorrow because the routine seemed to work, he laughed:

“Unfortunately, I don’t work weekends, I only work Monday to Friday!”

The Rangers supporter and plumber now faces Dave Chisnell in the next round, as the world number 11, he represents an altogether stiffer test for Cameron Menzies.

At least he’ll have had a better night’s sleep and not spend his morning underneath a sink.
