Rangers failed in a bid to sign Leicester City and England striker Jamie Vardy during the striker’s time at Fleetwood Town, claims Ally McCoist.

McCoist was Rangers manager between 2011 and 2014 during the financial turmoil of administration and he was still trying to sign players despite the backdrop of what was going on.

Amongst them included Jamie Vardy, who had impressed scout John Brown during a trip to watch him play for Fleetwood Town.

But Rangers could not get the money together and Vardy – who fired Leicester City to the Premier League title in 2015 – would join Leicester in 2012 and the rest as they say is history.

“I tried to get Vardy when he was at Fleetwood, believe it or not, and I couldn’t get the money,” said McCoist [TalkSPORT].

“I’m deadly serious. My coach John Brown watched Jamie Vardy.

“To be fair, he had a great eye for a player. He watched him for 45 minutes and sent me a message saying, ‘we need to get this lad!’ That’s a fact.

“Clearly, that wasn’t to be either. There’s probably a few more I can think about, to be fair, but Vardy was probably the biggest [name I missed out on].”

Rangers left wondering what might’ve been with Jamie Vardy

Leicester City reportedly paid £1m to sign Jamie Vardy from Fleetwood Town and the striker has gone on to score 165 goals in 398 appearances for the club.

On top of that Jamie Vardy has also gone on to make 26 appearances for the England national team, scoring seven goals.

Still turning out for the Foxes, the striker remains one of the Premier League’s stalwart forwards and at 35, opened his account for the season by scoring against Wolves last week.

Meanwhile, Celtic fans levelling criticism of Rangers is a Champions League embarrassment.
