Rangers’ startling away form has heaped the pressure on Philippe Clement as the club slip behind in the Scottish Premiership title race.
Only a matter of weeks ago did it look like Rangers might go into the rest of 2025 within six points of Old Firm rivals Celtic.
But a run of three away matches without a win has put paid to any notion of title resistance from within the walls of Ibrox.
Defeat to St Mirren and draws with Motherwell & Hibs have punctured any goodwill from the Old Firm victory and leaves Rangers 13 points behind Celtic in the Scottish Premiership.
With another away trip to Dundee on the horizon, Sky Sports pundit Kris Boyd has taken aim at Rangers’ lacklustre away record and questioned the team’s mentality.
Rangers away record ‘not good enough’
”I think Rangers can win a game against top opposition,” Boyd told Sky Sports.
”We’ve seen that against Celtic. We’ve seen them cause teams in Europe threats.
”But it’s that consistency.
”Away from home it’s been absolutely terrible, there is no getting away from it.
”Four wins in their last 15 away from home is not good enough for teams down the bottom of the table, never mind a huge club like Rangers.
”Ross County haven’t won in more than a year away from home and they’ve got the same points (on the road) now than what Rangers have got this season.
”That shows you how bad the away form has been and they’re going to have to fix it.
”Another difficult game on Thursday away to Dundee.
“There is obviously something mentally because Rangers at home, they can reach the heights, we seen that against Celtic.
”We can speak about decisions all you want, the facts are that Rangers got themselves ahead again after the penalty decision, 3-2, and couldn’t see it out.
”When you see that goal there, I understand that teams will lose goals from set players if it’s good movement, you get away from your man.
”Rocky Bashiri was just standing in the middle of the six yard box, out-jumped Leon King, Liam Kelly was nowhere near it and heads it into the back of the net.
”I’ll say it again. Rangers really, really struggle to deal with physical teams, they’re lacking in that physicality area.”
Kris Boyd on Rangers catching Celtic
Kris Boyd has also silenced any talk of Rangers managing to haul back the 13 point gap against Celtic this season.
At the midway point of the campaign, Rangers have already seen Celtic overtake the club’s trophy record with their 119th major trophy in the Premier Sports Cup.
Celtic are also set to match Rangers’ world record domestic championship haul of 55 titles when they inevitably lift this season’s Scottish Premiership trophy.
With almost half the campaign to go, Kris Boyd reckons the points gap is already insurmountable and has given Rangers ‘absolutely no chance’ of turning things around.
”No chance,” said Boyd when asked about Rangers catching Celtic.
”When you go back to last week it was about pride, the team showing that they can compete with Celtic in a game.
”But over the course and distance of the season you can’t expect to win anything with that poor away record.
”It’s impossible. Whether it’s a young team, whether injuries or anything else that comes along with it.
”People might say ‘you’re always criticising’ but the facts are there in front of you.
”Four wins away from home for Rangers out of a possible 15 is not good enough.
“It doesn’t matter whatever stage it is at in a season, it’s not good enough.
”They need to find a way to rectify that.
”As for the league, it was over before Rangers even beat Celtic last week.
”Obviously Aberdeen have dropped off and Dundee United have picked up, they’re in third place right now.
”I always felt that it would be Celtic and Rangers would be one and two, I did always feel that Aberdeen would drop off.
”Not at the rate they have, I must add.
”For Rangers, they’re going to have to try and find some consistency and just keep going.
”The Scottish Cup is obviously a possibility and they’ve still got Europe as well but in terms of the league, absolutely no chance.”
