Rangers’ Europa League victory over Braga has had a considerable impact on the European coefficient with Scotland now all but guaranteed two Champions League spots in 2021/22.
The Ibrox side have been a revelation in this year’s Europa League and alongside Old Firm rivals Celtic they have delivered a much-needed boost to the European chances of Scottish sides.
With the much-publicised riches of the Champions League a considerable golden carrot for both Old Firm sides, this is major news for the game here.
Scotland has risen to 14th in the UEFA coefficient table after Rangers beat Braga at Ibrox and Celtic 1-1 drew away to Copenhagen.
The results move Scotland above Czechia in the table with the Eastern European nation having no sides left in European competition this season.
National coefficients are based on the results of each association’s clubs in the five previous UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League seasons.
The climb will not take effect until the 2021/22 season but it will offer two Scottish clubs, likely the Old Firm, the opportunity to both qualify for the Champions League.
Both sides famously qualified for the competition in 2007/08, the same season Rangers dropped down into the UEFA Cup and reached the final in Manchester.
According to UEFA, €2.04bn (£1.73billion) is shared out amongst teams competing in the Champions League and Super Cup.
