Rangers’ European conquerors Slavia Prague are embroiled in a fresh wave of racist allegations.
The Last 16 tie that Rangers lost last season, eventually descended into chaos as Slavia player Ondrej Kudela abused Glen Kamara. He was given a 10-match ban by UEFA.
These were truly disgusting scenes and one that surely should have seen the player banned for longer and the club punished more heavily than they were.
The ban for the Czech player saw him miss out on Euro 2020. However, this hasn’t appeared to solve anything.
In this season’s group stage, Glen Kamara was booed by 10,000 home fans every time he touched the ball when we played Slavia’s city rivals Sparta.
The abuse was as clear as day for everyone to hear, however, UEFA took no action on the matter.
The reaction even prompted the UK ambassador to meet with Czech foreign minister Jakub Kulhanek, in order for an apology
The club has been involved in a new storm as their assistant coach Pavel Rehak was allegedly heard abusing an opponent in their clash against Viktoria Plzen, The National report. Slavia deny the allegations.
The situation may come as no surprise to Rangers’ supporters after the scenes last season. With teams in Scotland doing everything they can to stamp out racism, it is tough to see this going on abroad.
With many teams taking the knee before matches and getting involved with the show racism the red card campaign in Scotland, it proves how behind some clubs on the continent are.
With Rangers playing Sparta Prague at home next in their European campaign, the onus is on the governing body to dish out fair punishment if anything were to happen.
The tie will prove to be an exciting one as both teams are vying for second spot in the group, a Rangers win by two clear goals will enable them to secure the runners-up position.
Hopefully, there will be no incidents like the previous time the sides met.
