Rangers’ Europa League rivals Standard Liege have been rocked by a serious injury to young Belgian centre-back Zinho Vanheusden.

The talented young defender was defending a cross in Standard’s weekend clash with Oostende in the Belgian Pro League when he landed awkwardly in a crunching challenge.

You can hear the 21-year-old centre-back wince in pain as he lands awkwardly on his leg in a massive blow to the Belgian club’s chances this season.

Vanheusden has played in 13 games for Standard this season – including the 2-0 defeat to Rangers – and is a former Inter Milan youth centre-half.

A highly-rated young defender, Vanheusden could be facing an extended spell on the sidelines with some reports suggesting Standard are fearing that the injury could involve the player’s ACL.

Rated at £18m only last season, the young defender – who has a solitary cap for the Belgian national side – was linked with a move to Wolves and Southampton last summer [Het Belang van Limburg].

Now, the Belgian side face an anxious wait to assess the seriousness of the injury with Standard toiling on the European stage so far this season.

The Belgians are without any points following defeats to Rangers and Benfica in their opening two matches but will be hoping to turn that form around away to Lech Poznan this week.

Standard are currently third in the Belgian Pro League, returning to winning ways at the weekend courtesy of a 1-0 win and late goal against Oostende.

Central defensive partner Noë Dussenne scored late on to secure all three points for Liege following Vanheusden’s serious injury in the first half.
