Rangers Euro achievement presents chance to create £60m Celtic gap

Rangers have all but secured an automatic Champions League place for Scotland and the reported £30m Euro riches which come with it for season 22/23.

Depending on who wins next season’s Champions League and Europa League – normally representatives from the big five leagues – 11^th place in the coefficient charts should be enough to guarantee qualification for the season after next.

Rangers secured the spot on Thursday evening after both Ukrainian sides left in Euro competition – Dynamo Kiev and Shakhtar Donestk – crashed out of the Europa League, losing to Villarreal and AS Roma respectively.

This adds a gigantic extra incentive onto next season’s league crown with the victor between Old Firm rivals Rangers and Celtic getting a substantial cash boost over the other.

Should Rangers cement their return to the top table of European football next season and qualify for the Champions League – a challenge in of itself – then this financial boost would be remarkable.

If Celtic do not make Europe’s premier club competition – the Parkhead club have a considerably harder route to the Group Stages – then this would help Rangers claw further into the financial gap between the two.

Win next season’s league title alongside this, and then that would effectively be a guaranteed £60m boost in the club’s campaign to overtake our Old Firm rivals following years in the doldrums.

What a prospect for Rangers and it is Rangers who deserve to take full advantage of that qualification place, having earned it for Scotland this season.

But it certainly adds an extra dimension to next season’s league title campaign.

Rangers crashed out of the Europa League at the Last 16 stage and were well beaten by Slavia Prague but the Czech club have disgraced themselves in the aftermath.
