Rangers’ rebuild will continue under the watchful gaze of 49ers Enterprises this summer as the Ibrox side prepare to be taken over by US backers.

But over the last two windows in particular, Rangers have been trying to slash their wage bill whilst shipping out overpaid players who blew their chance at Ibrox.

As part of that, there are no fewer than four high-earning Rangers stars out on loan with the club having some serious decisions to make come the end of the season.

For two of them at least, they’ve been brought right back down to Earth as a week of almighty highs ends in Wembley heartbreak.

Loan Rangers suffer Birmingham City heartbreak at Wembley

Rangers pair Ben Davies and Kieran Dowell suffered Wembley heartbreak as Peterborough defeated Birmingham City to retain the EFL Trophy.

Both players started the clash between the two League One sides but were powerless to resist as the Blues succumbed to a 2-0 defeat.

A stunning free kick from Harley Mills put the Posh in front before Hector Kyprianou’s excellent finish ensured that Chris Davies would not be celebrating a second major achievement in under a week.

It comes after Birmingham secured promotion to the Championship with victory over Peterborough in English League One last weekend.

The Blues have also been crowned division champions after Wrexham drew with Wigan Athletic.

Rangers target helps down Blues at Wembley

Rangers-linked Peterborough winger Kwame Poku played the entire match as the Posh were crowned EFL Trophy champions at Wembley.

The talented winger, 23, is out of contract at the end of the season and Rangers are one of a number of clubs named as potential suitors.

Peterborough chairman Barry Fry confirmed that Rangers had watched Poku this season but didn’t confirm if the attacker was the subject of any visiting scout’s attentions.

“A Championship club tried to force a deal through for Kwame in January, but he was injured at the time and they didn’t offer anything like what we wanted,” Fry said.

“They were just trying to get ahead of the game as they knew there would be many more clubs after him in the summer. He is the best player in League One after all.

“Celtic and Rangers have been at most of our games this season, but I don’t believe Kwame will go to Scotland. He will more likely sign for a top end Championship club.”
