Rangers were interested in signing Djordje Petrovic but could now see the goalkeeper make a big move to Liverpool or Manchester United.

We’re expecting to see Rangers move for a new goalkeeper at the end of the season.

Allan McGregor is now 41, Jon McLaughlin isn’t the long-term answer and Robby McCrorie has yet to break through.

Links to the likes of Shamal George, Freddie Woodman and Angus Gunn have already emerged with a new goalkeeper surely a top priority.

One name that may now be out of reach is Djordje Petrovic, who was on the Rangers radar under Steven Gerrard.

FootMercato reported back in the summer of 2020 that Rangers had enquired about signing Serbian stopper Petrovic from Cukaricki.

Just 20 at the time, Petrovic was seemingly fancied as a long-term heir to McGregor but Rangers instead went for an experienced stopper in McLaughlin.

As Rangers chase a new stopper, there may be a little regret over not going for Petrovic.

Former Rangers target Djordje Petrovic now wanted by Liverpool and Manchester United

Petrovic continued to shine in Serbia after missing out on a move to Rangers but did secure a switch last summer.

Major League Soccer side New England Revolution pounced to sign Petrovic, landing him as a replacement for now-Arsenal stopper Matt Turner.

Hailed as ‘absolutely incredible’ by Revs teammate DeJuan Jones, Petrovic has been turning heads over in the United States.

The Mirror now suggest that Liverpool and Manchester United are both chasing Petrovic ahead of a possible summer move.

Petrovic could now land a big Premier League move less than three years since Rangers looked into signing him.

That’s a great rise for the 23-year-old but maybe another sign that Rangers’ short-term approach to the goalkeeping position has cost them.

Maybe there is still a chance for Rangers to get back in for Petrovic but beating Liverpool and Manchester United sounds like a daunting task.
